Abstract
In many porous media applications, fractures account for the lion’s share of overall permeability and are thus crucial to flow and transport processes. If the fractures deform, permeability changes, frequently modelled using a cubic dependency on fracture aperture.
I will address several aspects of dynamic fracture permeabilities. Starting from a general motivation and sketching some example models of interest, I try to motivate this nonlinearity’s importance in modelling of coupled processes in fractured media. Finally, I will explain a particular challenge in solving the ensuing discretised system of equations and indicate a remedy improving convergence of a Newton linearisation.
