Abstract

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a medical procedure for treating osteoporotic vertebral bones, in which bone cement is injected into the porous cancellous bone and allowed to cure. However, the procedure carries a risk of the cement leaking outside the vertebra leading to complications. It is aimed to develop a model based on the framework of Theory of Porous Media that can simulate the procedure, so as to mitigate the risk of leakage. This requires the complex behaviours of the biomaterials to be included through appropriate constitutive models. In the current on-going work, these models have been studied and preliminary models have been developed.
