The Cluster of Excellence SimTech of the University of Stuttgart realises a public science exhibition at the Rathaus Stuttgart. The exhibition "Simulated Reality - How Bytes, Formulas and Computer Models Improve the World" will be shown from 26 September to 13 October 2023.

SFB 1313 is one of the cooperation partners of the SimTech exhibition, showing its new porous media exhibit "Below the surface - making the insvisible visible". It is designed for children from the age of six and adults interested in science and societal questions. It shows porous media processes in a playful and fun manner.

About the exhibit

Porous media are everywhere – also in the natural underground. But what do porous media have to do with evaporation and the drying of soils? Which role does high evaporation play in agriculture and what impact do different climate conditions have on the soil?

Our exhibit shows invisible porous media processes like flow, transport of dissolved salts, and the deformation of the soil that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Visitors can click through different climate and weather situations and explore the impact of rain or dryness for the soil and the atmosphere. They can test their knowledge with a quiz and immerse themselves in the world of porous media!
