Review: First SFB 1313 Summer School

September 27, 2019 / Elissa Eggenweiler

The first SFB 1313 summer school took place from September 9 to 20, 2019 and was a great experience for all participants.

At the Kick-Off event on September 9, all projects (P1 - P6) were introduced, comprising an interesting mix of topics and also collaborations between the project areas within SFB 1313:

  • P1) Pore-scale coupling of free-flow and porous-medium flow under local thermal non-equilibrium using a locally refined staggered grid approach
  • P2) Development of parallel efficient algorithms for Stokes-Darcy-coupling
  • P3) Statistical inversion of fractures in porous media using sharp and diffusive crack models
  • P4) Uncertainty-aware Bayesian validation and visual analysis of the spatiotemporal development of a microbially enhanced coal-bed methane production model
  • P5) Precipitation processes in porous media – comparing of different model approaches and experiments in micro-fluidic cells
  • P6) Implementation of a linearized transport equation as a coupling condition for free-flow and porous-medium flow in DUMUX

Starting from the first day after the Kick-Off event, all SFB 1313 doctoral researchers and also associated researchers got ready to work on one of the overall six projects for the following two weeks.

During the summer school the young researchers were supported by four invited international guests (Thomas Wick, Vahid Joekar-Niasar, Benjamin Uekermann, Matthjis de Winter) who also gave insight into their own research. It was a pleasure having them as guests here in Stuttgart and it was great to discuss about problems and challenges with "experts".

Besides doing research during the days, every Tuesday and Thursday there was an evening event planned where all researchers were invited to participate.

Within the first week of the summer school, a BBQ on the campus and a bar tour in the city center of Stuttgart were organized. In the second week every project was supposed to produce some – at least preliminary – results which could be shown at the Closing Event. Therefore, there was only one social event in the second week, a Board Game Evening on Tuesday where the researchers had pizza for dinner together.

On September 20, 2019, the Closing Event of the first SFB 1313 Summer School took place. The projects presented their progress results, showed what has to be be done in future and discussed the open problems. After the presentations everyone enjoyed the rest of the evening with some snacks, drinks and impressions of the passed days.

To sum up, the SFB1313 Summer School 2019 was a fruitful experience for the researchers and also a great success regarding the impressive results which the projects presented on the last day.
