Abstract

Understanding geological reservoir heterogeneities is key to predict effectiveness of fluid flow through porous media. This presentation is about an oil field in the Norwegian Sea, operated by Wintershall Dea. Once production on the Maria field started in December 2017, it became apparent that the envisioned drainage strategy did not work due to lack of pressure support to the producers. Since then, the operator and its partners Petoro and Sval Energi have implemented a number of measures within several disciplines to establish new strategy for stable production and maximum recovery.

The talk describes the changes to the reservoir depositional concept and related static and dynamic models since the exploration phase in 2014. It emphasizes the importance of a proper reservoir geological characterization on different scales to accurately assess the reserve potential.

Wintershall Dea is one of three main industry sponsors of the Bergen-based Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR) and aims to build a portfolio of CCS activities in Norway over the coming years. Utilizing existing subsurface knowhow – gathered over decades of oil & gas exploration and production projects – is a crucial element in these activities.

About the presenter

Bastian Köhrer studied Geosciences the University of Tübingen. He obtained a PhD in Geology in 2011 with a research project on Permian-Triassic carbonates in the Middle East, sponsored by Shell and Petroleum Development Oman. He joined Wintershall Dea – the largest German oil & gas company – in 2011. Since then he has been working in several technical and managerial roles in Germany, Norway and Qatar. Bastian currently holds a position as Subsurface Manager for the Maria Phase 2 development project in Stavanger, Norway. He further served as an EAGE Distinguished Lecturer in 2015/16 and as a Guest Lecturer in Reservoir Modelling at RWTH Aachen University (2015 to 2020). He is an active member of EAGE and AAPG and co-/authored over 50+ abstracts and publications, focusing on reservoir geology, characterization and modelling. Since 2023 Bastian is also member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources in Bergen.
