SFB 1313 grants scholarships for outstanding Master's students to promote their qualification for research in the field of porous media.

Andrea Vescovini from Politecnico di Milano, Master student of Mathematical Engineering, is one of our two SFB 1313 winter semester scholarship holders. He started his thesis research at the Department of Hydromechanics and Modelling of Hydrosystems (Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems) of the University of Stuttgart on 1st September 2018 and will stay until 28th February 2019. During his stay, he will work on a numerical study concerning flow and transport processes between porous media and turbulent free-flow domains.

More precisely, he will focus on developing methods that allow obtaining a better solution for the velocity field in a free-flow domain. This accurate description of the velocity is crucial because, when the free-flow is in a turbulent regime, many small eddies are generated and they have to be caught by the numerical method because they can have a strong influence on the exchange processes with a porous medium. This is even more important when the turbulent behaviour is enhanced by the roughness of the interface between a free-flow and a porous medium.

Andrea will implement the methods within the DuMuX framework and he will compare the results with those obtained with other available methods and with experimental data. The thesis is strongly related to the project area A of SFB 1313.

Thesis subject: A Fully Implicit Higher Order Staggered Grid Formulation of the Navier-Stokes Equations for Coupled Flow Systems
Supervisors: Anna Scotti (Politecnico di Milano), Luca Formaggia (Politecnico di Milano), Rainer Helmig (University of Stuttgart), Melanie Lipp (University of Stuttgart), Edward Coltman (University of Stuttgart)
