Abstract

Bioconcrete technology has emerged as a promising research field that aims to enhance the durability of construction materials, reduce maintenance requirements, and support the development of more sustainable building systems. In this context, microbially induced biomineralization, particularly microbial calcium carbonate precipitation, has attracted considerable attention as an environmentally friendly strategy to improve the mechanical performance and durability of concrete.

This presentation will highlight recent studies on different marine-derived bacterial strains capable of calcium carbonate precipitation. The findings will be discussed in terms of their potential applications in bioconcrete, with particular emphasis on their contributions to concrete performance and durability. Furthermore, the presentation will address the potential of diverse bacterial species for bioconcrete applications, demonstrating that the development of bioconcrete systems is not limited to a single model microorganism. Instead, a broader diversity of marine-derived bacteria represents a promising biological resource for developing sustainable, high-performance cementitious materials.

About Ecren Uzun Yaylacı

Ecren Uzun Yaylacı is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Aquaculture at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University in Türkiye. She graduated from the Department of Biology at Karadeniz Technical University and obtained her PhD from the same institution, with research focused on the identification of marine-derived bacteria. She conducted her postdoctoral research at the Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory of the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Her research focuses on marine microbiology, microbial biomineralization, and bioconcrete. In recent years, she has been investigating microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) by marine-derived bacteria and the potential use of these microorganisms in sustainable bioconcrete technologies. Through her research, she aims to integrate marine microbiology with engineering and construction materials science to develop innovative and environmentally sustainable biomaterials.
