Abstract

Soil salinization of irrigated croplands affects plant growth and evaporation from soil and contributes to soil degradation. Hence, the impact and the effective properties of salt crusts that form during evaporation of saline solution from porous media is of interest for the prediction of water transport in the soil and for the development of irrigation strategies. In order to investigate the intrinsic permeability of salt crusts, a novel gas permeability set-up was used. The results showed that the intrinsic permeability of different types of salt crusts was similar. In addition, preliminary results for the temporal development of permeability for MgSO4 crusts were obtained that will be used in combination with crust porosity from micro-XRCT scans to explore the feasibility of establishing a porosity-permeability relationship for MgSO4 crust formation.
