Inga Berre, professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bergen, will give the Anneliese Niethammer Lecture of the winter semester 2019/20 on October 29. She will give a talk about: "Mathematical and numerical modelling of process-structure interaction in fractured geothermal reservoirs".

Speaker: Inga Berre, University of Bergen (Norway)
Title: Mathematical and numerical modelling of process-structure interaction in fractured geothermal reservoirs
Date: October 29, 2019
Time: 3:45 pm
Location: MML, U. 1.003, Pfaffenwaldring 61, Campus Vaihingen

About the talk

In stimulation and production of fractured geothermal reservoirs, complex dynamics take place, where thermal, hydraulic and mechanical processes are dominated by the fractured structure of the formation. At the same time, the structure itself is affected by the processes, causing fractures to deform and propagate.

This talk will give a brief introduction to enhanced geothermal systems, and consider how mathematical modeling and numerical simulation based on discrete fracture-matrix models can be used to better understand governing mechanisms in reservoir stimulation and production. Examples will include modeling of fracture slip and opening due to hydraulic and thermal reservoir stimulation, as well as propagation of fracture wing-cracks due to shearing.

About Inga Berre
Inga Berre's main research interests are mathematical modelling, partial differential equations and numerical methods, in particular motivated by simulation of coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical processes in fractured geothermal systems. Related to these topics, she currently leads the research projects ERiS funded by The Research Council of Norway (RCN) and she is also WP leader of the RCN Toppforsk project TheMSES. Inga Berre chairs the Joint Program Geothermal, European Energy Research Alliance and she is co-chair of the SET-Plan Implementation Working Group on Deep Geothermal. She is member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, secretary of the SIAM GS activity group and member of the Interpore Program Committee.

About Anneliese Niethammer Lecture Series
The lecture series is organized by SFB 1313 and takes place once a semester. Renowned international female researchers speak on relevant topics of current research in the field of porous media.
