The City of Stuttgart organized the 4th Stuttgart Science Festival from 26 June to 5 July 2026 in cooperation with many scientific and non-scientific institutions.
The University of Stuttgart is one of the cooperation partners. SFB 1313 participated in the festival. In this context, we offerd the porous media exhibition "Kleine Poren – Große Wirkung" at the "Science Day for Schools" on 1 July 2026.
The exhibition was very well attended and a huge success. Over 600 pupils of different age took part at the science day and visited our exhibition as well. Many thanks go to the whole SFB 1313 team that helped on site and behind the scenes to organize and supervise the exhibition!
The porous media exhibition consisted of four stations, explaining porous media and porous media processes:
1. Hands-on exhibit "Below the surface": the environmental example of an earthworm that explains to us porous media processes that take place underneath the soil.
2. Porous media under the microscope: Visitors could examine different porous structures (coffee filter, paper, tree leaf, sponge) under the microscope.
3. New station: Porous media art and experiment table: Our new station was a success. Pupils created their own art piece with the porous medium "foam" and explored the beauty of porous structures. Furthermore, they could experiment with the porous medium "toilet paper" and discover flow, transport and deformation in porous media. They formed a worm out of the toilet paper and made him move with drribbling water on top of it.
